Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) currently affects approximately 6.8 million people worldwide. It is a chronic disease that leads to severe pain, exhaustion and in some cases colon cancer. Despite the existence of therapies, not every patient responds well to them, which makes people suffering from this disease nervous and stressed.   <\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What if the solution lies in our oceans, rivers and lakes?<\/strong> Numerous algae species produce an almost infinite number of compounds. Many of these molecules have health-beneficial effects. For example, they can relieve inflammation and block pain. In the Algae4IBD project, experts from various fields look at this untapped potential.
